Young Local Authority of the Year

It's always a moment of high excitement when teams of two from local authorities across the UK gather to compete for the coveted Young Local Authority of the Year title. Small rural authorities,  large metropolitan councils, London boroughs and everything in between, come together for 36 hours of intense competition, networking and sharing of ideas, thoughts and experiences in this unique event.

The Young Local Authority of the Year (established in 2006) is an annual competition with the aim of enhancing the professional development of people in the early stages of their careers in local government. Teams of two represent councils from across the UK. Each team delivers a short Argument paper on a subject of 'current interest or controversy' as well as a more informal 'On the Spot' presentation in which the team asks itself a question and answers it wthout notes in as close to three minutes as possible. Our coaches provide useful advice – in a helpful written briefing before the event and in rehearsal on the day of arrival.  The Young Local Authority of the Year offers a unique opportunity to meet and network with colleagues from other local authorities and to compete – in a friendly atmosphere! – for a prestigious title.

The Venue

We have an exciting new venue for the Young Local Authority of the Year!

In 2026, the competition will take place in Crewe Hall Hotel, Crewe, Cheshire. Set on eight acres of parkland, this majestic hotel offers a unique combination of 17th-century splendour and modern amenities. The original Jacobean mansion dates back to 1636 and has been extended to allow more accommodation and facilities including a swimming pool and gym.

The nearest railway station is Crewe which is a major national interchange and the northern terminus of the West Coast Main Line. The hotel is about five minutes (depending on traffic) by taxi from the station.

For delegates coming by car, the hotel is located off Junction 16 on the M6. There's a large free car park on the grounds of the hotel (500 spaces) with 10 fast chargers for EV vehicles.
