Katie Watson of Dumfries and Galloway Council won the title Scotland Young Thinker of the Year in Ayr last week (26-29 November 2024). She presented a paper on the effects of depopulation in her local region, arguing that a more decisive and proactive approach is needed both locally and nationally. The adjudicator commented: 'This paper was bold – she didn't pull any punches – and the writing was sharp. Katie included excellent personal testimony and her passion was admirable. She was a confident presenter, with great expression and energy. A spirited delivery matched the frustrated tone of her paper'.
The runner-up award went to Ryan Hardy of Falkirk Council for an intriguing paper on the benefits of nuclear energy. The adjudicator said: 'This was an evocative paper, crisply written. Statistics were used sparingly but effectively, and he made a potentially heavy subject interesting and relevant'.
The winning group in the Group Challenge were Group F (Katrina Gorman, Falkirk Council; Esha Nitnavare, Glasgow University; Jennifer Robertson, Scottish Government). Their presentation on the concept of 'courage' was well-rounded and considered, with impressive team work and convincing role-play.
Thank you to all delegates for being part of such a dedicated group.
Our next Young Scotland Programme will be held in Ayr at the end of May 2025. To book now, please see upcoming events.
