Harriet Thompson from The British Academy won the title England and Wales Young Thinker of the Year 2025 in Lancaster last week (29 April - 2 May). Her winning paper highlighted the damage inflicted by water companies on our surroundings – with particular focus given to Lake Windermere. The adjudicator commented that Harriet ‘described the science behind the catastrophe well and made it accessible to all in this well-written paper. She was a confident and polished presenter’.
The runner-up award went to Abigail John of Ofwat for an illuminating paper calling for all young adults to receive financial literacy education. A highly commended award went to Richard Hibbert from the Civil Service for his disciplined paper on the availability of nutritious food.
The winning group in the Group Challenge was Group D (Joe Danton, Civil Service; Abi John, Ofwat; Fidelma Meenaghan, Civil Service; and Brendan Rose, Civil Service). Their presentation on the concept of 'justice' was thorough – they packed a lot into six minutes.
Thank you to all delegates for their hard work and enthusiasm!
Our next Young England and Wales Programme will be held in Lancaster in September 2025! To book now, please see upcoming events.
